Mumbai WhatsApp campaign timing data: 7-10 PM outperforms 2-5 PM by 32 percentage points in open rate. Here's the breakdown by industry.

The Post:

Sharing timing data from 35 WhatsApp broadcast campaigns across 28 Mumbai businesses.

The finding is simple but the implications matter for anyone running WhatsApp campaigns in Indian cities.

The Problem

Most businesses schedule WhatsApp campaigns when their marketing/admin team has time. In practice, that means 10 AM-3 PM on weekdays.

Mumbai's actual customer activity on WhatsApp doesn't peak during those hours.

The Data (94,000+ messages tracked, June-December 2024)

Open rates by send time for Mumbai businesses:

Time WindowOpen RatePrimary Driver
6-9 AM84%Local train commute (Western, Central, Harbour lines)
9-12 PM71%Work hours, scattered attention
12-2 PM88%Lunch break browsing
2-5 PM61%Post-lunch work focus — worst window
5-7 PM86%Evening commute
7-10 PM93%Peak — family home, dinner done, decisions made
10 PM-12 AM78%Late night browsing

Businesses defaulting to 2-3 PM sends are hitting 61% open rates. Same businesses at 8 PM would hit 93%.

Why 7-10 PM is Mumbai's Peak

Mumbai-specific lifestyle factors:

Long commutes (Western Express Highway, local trains) mean most professionals reach home 7:30-9 PM. Dinner at 9-9:30 PM. By 9:30-10 PM, families are on sofas, phones out, making decisions together.

This is when Mumbai decides: which restaurant for Saturday, does this offer make sense to buy, should we book that appointment.

The effect is stronger in Mumbai than Delhi or Bangalore because Mumbai commutes are consistently longer and the post-commute relaxation window is later in the evening.

Industry-Specific Peak Times

Different industries within our study had specific peaks:

Restaurants and food: Best: Friday 6-8 PM (planning weekend dining) Second: Tuesday-Wednesday 12-1 PM (lunch deal decisions) Logic: Restaurant decisions are social and happen when plans form

Retail (clothing, electronics, home goods): Best: Thursday-Friday 8-9 PM (pre-weekend shopping mindset) Second: Weekend 10-11 AM Logic: Considered purchases happen when family is together

Real estate: Best: Saturday 10 AM-1 PM (dedicated family research time) Second: Sunday 4-6 PM (viewing planning) Logic: Property decisions require both partners, weekend works best

Healthcare/clinics: Best: Tuesday-Wednesday 9-11 AM (mid-week appointment mindset) Second: Friday 4-5 PM (before-weekend appointments) Logic: Weekday morning when health is on mind

Education/coaching: Best: Sunday 7-9 PM (parents discuss children's education as family) Second: Saturday 10 AM-12 PM Logic: Education decisions are family decisions, Sunday evening works

Salons/beauty: Best: Wednesday-Thursday 7-8 PM (booking for weekend) Logic: Friday is too late — weekend slots fill by Thursday

Festival Timing (Mumbai-Specific)

12 festival campaigns tracked during Navratri-Diwali period:

Ganesh Chaturthi campaigns: Send 4-5 days before festival, 8 PM on Thursday-Friday. Mumbai's Ganesh Chaturthi is uniquely large — restaurant bookings, new clothes, sweets. Peak demand is 4 days before, not day-of.

Diwali campaigns: 10-14 days before for considered purchases (electronics, furniture). 3-5 days before for gifts and sweets. Best time: Thursday 8 PM.

Navratri: 5-7 days before festival start for fashion and event businesses.

The Retarget Timing

After initial campaign, retarget campaigns to "read but didn't click" segment perform best at:

48-72 hours after initial campaign (not immediately) Same time of day as original campaign (if evening worked, evening retarget works)

Conversion rate on retarget: 2.8x higher than initial broadcast conversion rate in our data.

The delay matters. Sending retarget immediately after broadcast feels aggressive. 48-72 hours gives customers time to consider the initial message naturally before receiving the follow-up.

The Practical Takeaway

If you're running WhatsApp campaigns for any Indian business:

Check what time you're currently scheduling broadcasts. If it's 2-3 PM, you're leaving 30+ percentage points of open rate on the table. Shift to 8 PM for general campaigns. Use industry-specific timing where it applies.

This costs nothing to change and consistently produces the largest quick improvement we see across campaigns.
